BONITA BEACH — In just the past 30 days, Southwest Florida has seen an unprovoked shark attack in Marco Island, a massive hammerhead shark feeding just feet from shore in Bonita Springs, an adult bull cruising a sea wall in Estero, and a one-ton tourist with teeth making a cameo appearance off the coast of Naples. On the surface, to the uninitiated, the uninformed, or, sometimes, the willfully ignorant, it might appear that Southwest Florida has an infestation of man-eating sharks.
